The Versatile Singer!

I’m quite the Youtube browser when I grow bored. But, my Youtube browsing actually paid off this time. I found quite the versatile singer from mainland China! I was excited since all the singers I’ve ever really heard of before only came from Taiwan and Hong Kong. I’m not Taiwanese nor from Hong Kong so I was always waiting to hear if there was any amazing celebrity from mainland China. And I’ve found just the person!

Zhang Liang Ying (张靓颖), or Jane Zhang, is a girl with an amazing voice. “Her vocal range ranges from at least the D below middle C, up to the F above soprano C” (Wikipedia). She can sing along to traditional Chinese music, Chinese pop, but she can also sing just like Christina Aguilera or Madonna. She can sing in Mandarin, Cantonese, English, Spanish, and Japanese. And I like her singing all the more because the second part of her first name (颖) is the same as the first part of my first name!

But putting names aside, her songs are really just wonderful. I listened to her rendition of “Beautiful” and I was amazed at how much it sounded like Christina Aguilera. Christina Aguilera’s songs are by no means easy to perform, so a Chinese girl with English as her second language (or maybe not even her second language) with such pitches really made me go “wow.” Especially since she was never trained for her voice. She never received voice lessons before.

So, I encourage you to give her songs a listen. Check out her many songs on Youtube.
