Stomach viruses

February 6, 2008 | Posted in Life | 4 Comments

Yesterday, at 3:45 AM, I opened my eyes and looked over at my clock. My stomach hurt and I was feeling nauseous. Suddenly, I felt like throwing up, and I was in the bathroom, vomiting into the toilet. My stomach felt a little better and so I went back to bed. When my alarm rang at 7:00 AM to get ready for school, I felt sick again, and I ran into the bathroom and threw up again. Oh great. It was only a half-a-day, too, which meant that seniors had nothing to do in school. I was basically going to show up at school for attendance and then leave (I didn’t feel in the mood to listen to lectures about drugs and alcohol). Instead, I stayed home today, sick and unable to eat anything.

I decided to take a shower but afterwards, I threw up again. There was also this lump in my throat–similar to the lump that develops in the throat right before crying. My mom grew worried, and she took me to the doctor at 9:45 AM. There, I learned that I most likely had a stomach virus that was going around and for treatment, I wasn’t supposed to eat anything. “Only drink clear fluids, and start small at the beginning.”

I returned home and went directly to bed, where I slept for two hours and then decided to drink some tea. I drank two small sips and then went back to sleep for an hour, after which I drank two small sips again. At around 3 PM, I finished the tea. My stomach was hurting a lot though, which I think was a combination of hunger pains and the stomach virus. Soon,  I threw up again (I was basically throwing up water though, since I had nothing left in my stomach). But after I threw up this time, the lump in my throat started to go away.

My mom called the doctor and my doctor told me that instead of drinking tea, I should try Gingerale or Coke. So, my mom went to go buy some Gingerale as I tried to sleep again. I think at 4 PM, I drank some Gingerale and my stomach felt much better. Or at least, it didn’t hurt as much.

I was back in bed, sleeping and drinking a few sips of Gingerale every hour or so. When it was 7 PM, my mom gave me some porridge water to drink, since I was really hungry and I couldn’t eat anything. But, I soon fell asleep again. I woke up at 12:30 AM, 4 AM, 5 AM, 6 AM, and 7 AM today, but each time I went back to sleep. When I finally got up at 7:30 AM, I was feeling a little faint. My mom wanted me to eat some toast and porridge water before I moved, so I did. Then she wanted me to take a shower, which I personally didn’t think was a good idea, because I really felt like fainting afterwards. Anyway, I went back to bed for another hour before I felt a little better.

I just ate some porridge at 12 PM. My head still hurts a little, but at least I’m not throwing up anymore. It’s just such a pity that in these two days that I’m sick, there’s no school. Basically, I spent my two days of rest being ill and starved.

I only had the stomach flu once. I got it from my brother. It sucks because I couldn’t throw up right away. I felt sick to my stomach and at first I tried to go to the bathroom, but nothing happened. Then about 5 hours later, (this happened at night, btw) I couldn’t sleep so I went to the bathroom again and once I stepped inside, I instantly threw up. It was horrible. Everything I ate the day before came out. After that, I felt better and I didn’t throw up again. I couldn’t eat anything for 2 days because everything made me feel sick. I had a minor one so it wasn’t as bad as yours, but I hated it. Throwing up is not fun!

Ouch. I don’t recall myself being diagnosed with the stomach flu before, but being sick - I can certainly feel your pain. Feeling sick is pure, horrible! Reading the details of your experience was certainly very grueling for you to go through, but I’m glad you’re doing better Yingna, especially since you wrote this on Lunar’s eve :) Thank god for sugary soft drinks to fuel our low-sugar level bodies when we’re down in the dumps!

And on the note of Lunar’s, HAPPY LUNAR NEW YEAR!!! Hope you got lotsa red pocket money ~

Lol. xD It’s good that you’ve gotten better. My little sister caught some kinda flu virus and although she doesn’t throw up, she’s always faint, coughing, having a high fever and blowing her nose. She ended up skipping school today because when she did want to go yesterday, she came home and started puking everywhere. She didn’t puke today though. I really do wonder what’s going around though.
It’s a good thing my immune system is pretty darn good. Lol. I rarely ever get sick and if I do, it’s rarely anything too serious. All I ever get is maybe a cough and a runny nose for about two to four weeks, then I’m all better again. So, I’d rather be sick (like that…sort of) for just two days than sniffing mucus and gagging on everything for nearly a month. xD

Would you like to respond?
